June 6, 2021 – Hoosick Falls Central School District
No Change to school mask requirements
As has been reported by news outlets, on Friday afternoon, Dr. Howard Zucker, New York State Commissioner of Health issued a letter (click here to read) to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding differing mask policies for summer camps and schools. Media coverage of this letter has led to confusion as these changes have not been formally communicated to school districts.
We were informed today (Sunday, June 6) by the New York State Department of Education that Dr. Zucker’s letter has not changed any existing arrangements:
“Therefore, schools should continue to operate under their existing procedures until further notice.”
At this time, we are awaiting for official guidance on mask changes sometime this week from the NYSDOH or the NYSED. The school district will review and evaluate the guidance before considering or making any changes to its COVID-19 mask protocols.
Weather and Heat in the coming days
After meeting with regional superintendents and county Department of Health officials, the District will be implementing temporary mask changes in anticipation of the expected heat and humidity tomorrow.
On Monday, we will provide teachers and staff with the discretion to extend mask breaks in class while students are seated. Mask wearing can also be relaxed outdoors during recess and physical education while following all other COVID-19 mitigation protocols.
No changes will take place to social distancing, handwashing, and the continued wearing of masks in hallways and on buses as these have worked throughout the school year and have allowed us to keep our schools and offices open.
The health and safety of our students and staff remains our top priority as we prepare to finish one school year and plan for the next. We thank you for your patience as we await formal guidance that will allow us to make any permanent changes to mask protocols.
If additional guidance is released, we will contact you with full details.
Should you have questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the Superintendent of Schools, Patrick Dailey, at email@example.com .
