Hoosick Falls Middle School took home the award for Viewers’ Choice during New York State’s first “What’s So Cool About ManufacturingTM” (WSCM) video competition. The Student Video Awards ceremony took place at Proctors GE Theater on March 19th and the contest was organized by the Center for Economic Growth (CEG). The video that the Hoosick Falls students created, to highlight local manufacturer, Saint-Gobain, received the most online votes from the general public, out of the total 22,000 votes cast during March 5th - 8th.
Seven Capital Region schools and fifty-two students participated in CEG’s inaugural WSCM Capital Region, NY. This program encourages middle school students to engage with local manufacturers and produce real-world, project-based videos that highlight “What’s So Cool About ManufacturingTM.” Three other awards were given out during the event. The Career Pathways Award was given to Kipp Albany Community Charter Middle School, for their video featuring Centrotherm. The Outstanding Creativity Award went to Shaker Middle School for their video about the Aquatic Development Group, and the Outstanding Overall Program Award was presented to Central Park Middle School in collaboration with Environment One Corp.
Saint-Gobains Global Market Manager, Richard Austin, shared with the CEG that “The kids showed fantastic enthusiasm and creativity as they interviewed the Saint-Gobain team, and the final project was truly impressive. Our team enjoyed answering their questions and telling interesting stories about our most impactful products, and we could tell from the final video that the kids were listening.”
Hoosick Falls Central School’s Superintendent, Patrick Dailey, was pleased to sign the Middle School up for this program this year and after such fantastic first-year results, is already looking forward to participating again next year. Teacher Coaches Damien Bundrick and Sarah Livingstone agreed that it was a wonderful learning experience for the students and a fun project to highlight career pathways in the manufacturing field. This year’s team consisted of 13 7th-grade students: Alivia Cameron, Elise Delgado, Sadie Drew, Aurora Ferraro, Bruce Hagadorn, Laney Kasulinous, Isabelle Lewis, Anastacia McCart, Korben Michaels, Molly Mook, Gretta Rowlands, Kate Sparks, and Bella Wysocki.
